This sphalerite-galena butterfly from the 2nd Soviet mine in Dalnegorsk, Russia, clearly illustrates that crystal growth in ore veins is not a unidirectional process, but rather that phases of crystallization, dissolution, and recrystallization follow one another multiple times. It can be assumed that the crystals in this specimen were larger at some point in the past and subsequently partially dissolved during one or more phases, resulting in their rounded shape. During the recrystallization phase, they were covered by secondary crystallization. Or was it all completely different?
